Ruud heat pump is the electric water heater that is used for the efficient hot
water production in residential applications.
Ruud heat pump is the owner of several awards received in 2009 and 2010 and is selected among best ten products, per Architectural Product Reports, Building Green Magazine and 2009 Green Build Expo.
This
heat pump of all electric water heaters from the Ruud
manufacturer is Energy
Star qualified, and therefore, eligible for federal tax breaks and
other local or state incentives and rebates. Use the article about heat pumps water

Ruud
Heat Pump Water Heater Features
Ruud
heat pump is the high efficient electric heater with the energy
factor of 2.0, which is more than double of the most efficient
electric water heaters. Increased energy efficiency is coming from the
heat pump ability to extract the heat from warm surrounding air and deliver it to
the water, and reduced standby heat loss with the thicker foam of 2.5".
Ruud electric heat pump is the air source unit that uses the compressor to
increase the hot water temperature. Two 2kW high quality stainless
steel resistor heating elements are also part of the heat pump as the
backup heaters.
Ruud manufactures two heat pump models;HP40RU with the 40-gallon
tank size and HP50RU with the 50-gallon tank size. Both models have a decent
10-year tank and parts limited warranty. Both models are the fast recovery units with
the first hour rating of 67 and 50 gallons per hour, making it ideal
for middle size homes.
Heat pump is equipped with the user-friendly LED control panel with the temperature display and
touch-pad, so you can check and select or change the hot water temperature.
Ruud heat pump is equipped with two safety systems; one is to protect the unit from
freezing and the other from overheating.
Heating Modes
Ruud
HP40RU and HP50RU models are designed to operate in one of the three different heating
modes; which can be selected through the LED control panel and based on
the desired hot water temperature, energy efficiency and water demand:
When the heat pump works in the Energy Saver mode it provides a
maximum thermal efficiency of 2.0. Electric backup heater is OFF.
Normal mode is ideal for families with a high
hot water demand. Both heat pump and backup electric heater are
engaged as needed. Normal mode will provide energy efficiency of 1.5.
Electric heat only mode is a temporarily mode
utilized on a short term basis when the heat pump is disabled. In this mode, electric heating elements will operate only.
Energy Saver mode is recommended mode as the most efficient setting
where the energy factor of 2.0 is achieved by the extracting the warmth
from the surrounding air only, and without engaging the backup electric
heating.
Press the key on the control pad labeled as
Energy Saver and LED will light up when activated. When the heat pump is
working in the Energy Saver mode, compressor operation will be maximized and use of
the heat will be minimized.
Use
Normal mode if the previous mode doesn't supply enough hot water. This
mode will maximize the performance while still providing energy
savings.
The hot water temperature on the Ruud electric heat pump water heater can be
regulated by pushing the arrows up or down, located on the keypad and
behind the access panel. Outgoing water temperature is factory set
close to the 120 F as the anti-scalding protection.
In Normal or
warm temperature setting, water in the tank will be
maintained at 120-124 F, 130-135 F will be maintained for Hot setting
and in Vacation mode the tank temperature is maintained around 90 F.
Installing Ruud Heat Pump Water Heater
With
21" in diameter, Ruud heat pumps are not complicate to install; they have an easy
side access to 3/4" NPT inlet and outlet water connections and
condensate drain, 1/2" overflow connection and T&P valve which is factory installed.
The
unit must be installed per local or national and utility codes and
following certain requirements from the manufacturer and utility
company.
Rule of thumb when looking for the right location for
your heat pump is to install it close to the application with the
greatest hot water demand, but at the same time to allow an easy access
for servicing and maintaining the unit.
Provide at least 8" clearance above your Ruud heat pump unit to allow an unobstructed air circulation.
For
the best performance, install Ruud heat pump in the room where it is
warm, including garage, basement or attic, and where the temperature is 40
degrees or above and the room size is approximately 10x10x10 ft.
Use
the rating plate mounted on the water heater or Ruud heat pump owner's manuals to find the voltage
requirements, wattage load... Here are some of the requirements for the Ruud heat pump: 240 V 1PH,
21.5 max. AMP draw, 10 gauge wire and minimum 30 AMP circuit.
Maintaining Ruud Heat Pump Water Heater
Ruud heat
pumps are also simple to maintain where the air filter is top mounted and
washable. Recommendation is to clean the filter once a month with mild
detergent and water.
Anode rod is the premium quality, non-removable
and
together with the exclusive Ruudglas tank lining extends the
metal tank life, by protecting it from the aggressive water action and
corrosion. As the anode rod is consumed over the years, to avoid the rotten
egg smell, perform chlorination of the water to reduce if not remove
the smell.
