Rheem HP50 Heat Pump Hot Water Heater Will Not Produce Sufficient Hot Water

by Mike Kmetz
(Laramie Wyoming, USA)

My new Rheem HP50 does not produce enough hot water. After contacting Rheem and performing their 'Draw Down' test, it is clear that the unit is flawed.

Their draw down test sequentially measures the temperature drop after drawing 35 gallons of water. This unit has a drop of over 30 degrees. The maximum should be 20.

The Rheem tech rep says this is normal for a heat pump hot water system. Normal or not, it does not provide sufficient hot water for even a short shower (with a 2GPM shower head). My advice is to stay away from this unit. I'm stuck with it unfortunately unless anyone has a recommendation.
